Two 12-year-olds were playing with a loaded handgun in Oak Hill, Florida, on July 11. Bystanders told dispatch they had heard gunshots, adding when they went to ensure everyone was alright, one of the boys aimed the weapon at their car with children inside. A deputy with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office responded and heard more gunfire as she arrived at the scene.
Viewers watching body cam footage can hear the deputy yelling at the two boys to come out. As the pre-teens approached the officer, one of them told the other not to lie. After coming out with their hands up like the officer said, one of the youth admitted to shooting a “real gun,” claiming someone told them they could.
Authorities arrested both young males. They were then charged with possession of a firearm by a person under 16 and discharging a firearm after finding four shell casings and the gun, still loaded with one in the chamber. Police also cited the pre-teen who pointed the gun at the bystander with aggravated assault with a firearm.
According to the Volusia Sheriff Office’s press release, both boys are currently in a juvenile detention center, and the situation remains under investigation as authorities work to determine how they acquired the gun.
