Austin Shooting Victim Had a Promising Life Ahead Of Her Abruptly Taken Away
(UnitedReader.com) – The only aspect worse than the crime surging across the US is the fact that violent crime is also increasing. It’s almost become commonplace to hear about all the shootings and killings in Chicago and other metro areas. The statistics are appalling, especially in Austin, Texas, where the city appears to be on pace for yet another record number of homicides in 2022.
Setting Records
According to Van Life Wanderer, a site determining the safety of America’s cities for travelers that uses data from the Austin Police Department (APD), the city had 83 murders in 2021. The staggering figure is the highest record of homicides the metropolitan area has ever seen and reportedly a 77% increase from 2020 murder statistics.
As the Austin American-Statesman reports, Austin did see less killing in February 2022 compared to January 2022, but the city remains on pace to meet or even exceed 2021’s total number of homicides.
According to the APD, February 2022 may have had a lower instance of murders than it did in 2021; however, the city was over its yearly total at the end of February compared to 2021. 2022 saw 13 people killed by the end of its second month in Austin. In 2021, there were only 12 homicide victims by the end of February.
The Tragic and Shocking Death of Anna Wilson
One of the people who became a victim of Austin’s violence was 25-year-old Anna Moriah Wilson, known as “Mo” by her friends. Wilson was a talented athlete, namely in regard to gravel and mountain bike racing.
A story from VeloNews explains Wilson was in Austin after flying from Colorado to compete in the Gravel Locos race in Hico, Texas on May 14. Odds were betting on Wilson to win the race.
According to Fox 7, authorities responded to a call around 10 p.m. that Wilson was unconscious and bleeding. Upon arrival, police discovered the 25-year-old bleeding due to multiple gunshot wounds; first responders attempted to save the woman’s life, but they pronounced her dead only minutes later.
The athlete’s death has impacted the gravel mountain bike racing community, as the Leadville Race Series took to Twitter in Wilson’s tribute, offering condolences to her family and friends.
Our hearts are broken by the tragic passing of Moriah Wilson. Her absence will leave an irreplaceable hole in our Leadville Family and in the entire sport of cycling.
Our deepest condolences go out to those close to Mo as we mourn this difficult tragedy. pic.twitter.com/iEl9rg4LFf

Police are currently investigating the incident. Fox 7 reported that authorities do have a person of interest in Wilson’s untimely death, but they haven’t released any further information at this time. These types of tragedies serve as a reminder of just how fleeting and unpredictable life can be.
