(UnitedReader.com) – Abortions are a controversial topic. People hold a variety of opinions both for and against the procedure; each having their own reasons. While some cities and local governments have declared themselves sanctuaries for women seeking abortion, others have decided to go in the opposite direction. That includes one city in the Midwestern state of Ohio.
On October 25, the city of Mason, Ohio, decided that it would ban all abortions within city limits. Lebanon, another Ohio city, passed a similar measure earlier this year.
Mason doesn’t currently have any abortion clinics within its boundaries. However, the city council still felt the need to act. A panel of seven voted 4 to 3 in favor of banning the medical procedure, also making it a criminal offense.

Supporters of the ban claim it will keep unwanted abortion clinics from popping up in their community. The new law mandates that anyone who aids or abets an abortion within the city’s limits will face felony charges that carry a sentence of up to a year in prison and a $2,500 fine per procedure performed. The city of Mason indicated that the ban would go into effect beginning on November 24.
