Report Proves Collapsed Bridge in Pittsburgh Could Have Been Prevented

(UnitedReader.com) – There is a ton of speculation surrounding the recent collapse of a Pittsburgh, PA bridge. The structure’s failure came just hours before President Biden was supposed to speak about his infrastructure bill in the city. While many observers say it’s too coincidental, one thing is sure — the collapse was entirely preventable.

The bridge’s collapse on January 28 injured several people, many of whom ended up in the hospital. According to NBC News, the federal government was going to allocate $327 million to Pennsylvania for the state to repair bridges. Around $49 million would go toward fixing “off-system” and local bridges. Even with all that funding, the recently collapsed bridge never made the maintenance list.

Pennsylvania’s 2021 transportation improvement program showed no intention of repairing the 447-foot bridge despite its poor condition. The Forbes Avenue bridge, which stretches over Frick Park, earned an overall rating of four out of a scale of nine, with nine being the best according to the state’s department of transportation. The substructure rated six out of nine, while the deck only earned a four.

So, why didn’t the state slate the Forbes Avenue bridge for repairs? It was clearly a danger to anyone that crossed, proven by its coincidental collapse.
